Pablo Chavez

  • 6 Comments on Pablo Chavez

Pablo Chavez, age 85, resident of Elmhurst since 1969: beloved husband of Susanne, nee Kendl; loving father of Yvonne Schmidt and Diane Chavez; proud grandfather “Opa” of Daniel Schmidt (Kayla Joyce), Katherine Schmidt, and Joshua Clague; brother of Dolores Calhoun and the late John Chavez, Theresa Garcia and Lorenzo Chavez; uncle to nieces and nephews. At a young age, Pablo joined the military and was accepted at the Army Language School in Monterey, California where he studied Czech. He was then stationed in a small town in Germany near the Czech border where he met his future wife Susanne. After returning to the US, Pablo spent his career in law enforcement starting with the Chicago Police Department and retiring from the Department of Justice as a highly-awarded Drug Enforcement Agent in 1989. A passionate Chicago sports fan, he loved supporting the Bears and Bulls. He also enjoyed biking and working out at the Elmhurst Courts health club. At home, he was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather known for being an avid reader and lover of travel, good food and the occasional bad joke. Adoringly referred to as “Pablito” by those who loved him, he will always be remembered for his fierce loyalty, unwavering commitment to family, his sense of humor and gentle demeanor. A celebration of Pablo’s life is planned for later this year. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 7272 Greenville Ave., Dallas, TX 75231. Arrangements handled by Gibbons Funeral Home, Elmhurst. 630-832-0018 or www.gibbonsfuneralhome.com

Pablo was a terrific agent and a fine fellow. I enjoyed working with him at Chicago in the late ‘70s. It was always fun to share a couple of beers with him at Harry’s Bar after work. He was a gentleman, and an all-around good guy. Rest In Peace.

He was my father and I loved him very much. I was a troubled person but it was not his fault. I should have told him how much he meant to everyone

Although separated by language and two continents, although we rarely met, you always made me feel like family. Pablo, you will always be my uncle in America. You will remain unforgotten.

Onkel Pablo was a great man and was always a pleasure to be around. Always remember his strong handshakes. My mom always had great things to say about him too. He was everyone’s uncle. He will be missed by all who knew him. Sending love to his family.

Sympathy to all on Pablo’s death.
I did not know Pablo well but we both retired in 1989 from similar work but for different agencies, both had been on the CPD prior, and both lived in Elmhurst. Always enjoyed running into him in our Elmhurst retirement years- him out working on his yard, and more recent years at Jewel and on walks. After recently learning of Pablo’s death, I told my grandchildren that I saw Pablo as “the real thing” and how good it is to meet such people in your life. I have also told them that after I die I intend to be a part of their lives and cheering them on forever and I believe I will be able to. Same with Pablo and his loved ones. I firmly believe he can listen well to you and is even better able to help.
