William T. Loughman, age 89, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family. Born in Chicago to William J. and Josephine, nee Jucik Loughman. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois in 1952. Bill flew fighter jets for the Air Force and Air National Guard, and became an airline pilot. Bill flew for North Central Airlines and American Airlines for the next 35 years, and met his wife, Boots, when she was a flight attendant for North Central. Bill had a passion for reading, and applied it to baseball and history via newspapers. An avid collector, he accumulated publications, photographs and baseball cards. The diehard Cubs fan listened to classical music, and liked spending time at home after a career of international travel. Bill was known for his wit, calm demeanor, wealth of knowledge and silver-tongue. Bill was the beloved husband of Boots for over 58 years; loving father of Mike (Deb) Loughman, Katie (Bob) Theophilus, Pat (Colleen) Loughman and Dan (Julie) Loughman; proud grandfather of TJ and Kelly Loughman, Kevin and Kyle Theophilus, Sarah and Anna Loughman and Emily, Caroline and Will Loughman. When I received notice that I was selected to become a Captain for American Airlines, I spent the next 5 weeks in our flight school in the Dallas area.
Then it came time to fly on the line with passengers and Bill was selected as my instructor. We flew to Tucson and had a night there. The next day to
San Francisco where we met my sister and husband and I bought lunch and then back to Tucson for the second night. Day three back to Chicago and my official sign off as a Captain! What an exciting time, and you can imagine the information Bill gave me. How does one learn all those things?
Well, he did know so much, and I had the pleasure to absorb all the information!!! What a great guy and instructor. It was my pleasure to pass on some of his knowledge to my students in later years. We need more guys like him.
