Kevin M. Cooney, age 54, of Addison, beloved husband of Sherri, nee Wolf; devoted dad of Jillian and Corin; loving brother of Keli (Jeff) Mappa and brother-in-law of Linda (Fred) Weishaupt and Marcy (Agostino) Chiaramonte; cherished son of the late Sharon, nee Greene and the late Gerald Cooney; fond uncle, devoted coach, mentor and friend to everyone. Kevin was the proud O-Line Coach of the three time State Champion IC Catholic Prep Football; former Coach with Addison Trail Girls Softball and Boys Football, Addison Girls Sports Program and two time National Champion with the Addison Cowboys Youth Football. Public Visitation Friday, 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Gibbons Funeral Home, 134 South York Road, (½ mile North of Saint Charles Road), Elmhurst. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 225 N Michigan Ave , Ste 1200, Chicago, IL 60601 or IC Catholic Prep Football, 217 Cottage Hill Avenue, Elmhurst, IL 60126.     Unbelievable you can’t be there to help me like so many times before. Unbelievable you are not there to coach and cheer and promote sports like you so passionately have in the past. And most unbelievable you can’t be there to help your family with the same thoughtfulness and caring I saw in the short time I came to know you. You will be so missed the world will wobble from the hole that cannot be so quickly filled. I am sorry you had to leave, godspeed on your journey; our memories will keep you here for eternity.

    What a terrific loss to everyone who knew Kevin especially his immediate family Sherri, Jillian, Corin, and Keli. WE were extremely fortunate to have his company at many family gatherings, and he will be deeply missed. Kevin may be gone but he will always be in our hearts. Yale & Judy Mappa.

    Awesome picture of Kevin and his smile. He always made me smile when I saw him smiling. I feel honored to call him my friend. I loved how much he bragged about his family. He took such pride of being a great husband and awesome Dad. I am hurting along with you now but he will always be in my heart . The great memories and times together and his zest for life is only some of the reasons I loved him. I feel so special to be part of the Cooney family!!! Your Friend forever, Brett

    I coached Little League when Kevin was 11 and 12 years old. I lived on 35th Ave. in Melrose Park like Kevin. My sons and Kevin played baseball on the Grant School playground. When I talked to Kevin at 11-12 years old I knew immediately that this was a polite, good kid. In approximately 1977 I was coaching a team playing against Kevin’s team. It was a game for 1st place and Kevin was playing center field. The game was tied 2 to 2, runner on 1st. The coach looked at the batter who was one of my sons, and told Kevin, “Move in, you’re too deep.” Kevin shook his head “No”. The coach then yelled,”Move in!” My younger son was 9 years old but had a lot of power, and Kevin knew this. He shook his head “No” again. But finally he moved in. The ball was hit over Kevin’s head, hit the fence and scored the winning run. Kevin slapped his glove against his leg in disgust and went into the dugout without saying a word. I later coached him on the All Star team. I told Kevin that it was not his fault they lost. He was a good kid at 12 years old. When I met him 25 years later he was the same great kid, but now a better man. I am so so so sorry. All my sympathy to his family.

    My deepest condolences to the family and friends of Kevin. We grew up in the same neighborhood and lost contact after High School. I was fortunate to run into him a few times over the years at football coaching events and he greeted me with a huge smile and a big hug like it hadn’t been over 20 years since we saw each other. He was a gregarious and wonderful man. He will be missed.

    Such an excellent man! Was always happy to see me, likewise. I was very fortunate to meet such a great mentor when he would help with football. I am very sorry for your loss Jill and Cori. Your dad was very kind to me and I have to make sure that doesn’t go unnoticed. Please continue to spread the joy and love like your father always did!

    I am so sorry for your loss. Mr. Cooney was a great mentor and such a joy to be around. When he saw me he always made sure to ask how I was with his big smile. I want to make sure that his delightful and vast personality will not go unnoticed. Jill and Cori, I’m sorry for your loss but your father is an excellent person and I cherished all of his advice in football.

    Have known Kevin as we all grew up in the same town in Melrose Park. I believe Kevin lived behind the Pellicori’s on 35th and there were many events played at Sharps park on our side of town (west Melrose). Played softball against Kevin and actually went on one of those fantastic golf trips to Vegas years ago with Kevin and all his golf buddies. Kevin was always a fun loving guy and as the video portrays everyone loved him especially in his sports world. Sad such a young man has to leave so soon. He will be missed by all he touched. My sincere condolences to his wife, kids, and family

    I am very saddened on the passing of my cousin. Even though I would have wish I got to know him better. I have a hole in my heart because he was a great brother, husband, father and cousin. I know he is up in heaven playing football with my uncle, but Lord you took him too early. Love you.

    Thoughts and prayers go out to the family and loved ones at this time. We all remember Coach Cooney as a great member of the community, and a mentor in the lives of many. Much of what I learned from him has stayed with me through the years, and I can’t express how fortunate I am to have really gotten to know Coach Cooney. Those who knew him as I did will remember him for his smile, positivity, and tenacity!

    Our hearts ache. There are no words that describe the extent of his loss to those who had the good fortune to know Kevin. “ I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” Maya Angelou. Kevin, Sherri and their family always made our family feel loved, welcome and cared for – people who show up- for everything. Friends who can celebrate, challenge and console. I will so miss the things there are no pictures of – a knowing look, laughing at literally nothing to the point of tears. The pranks. Friends who are true witnesses to our lives – we just can’t replace – and will keep alive in spirit, memory and action. Kevin, you had a methodical plan for everything – nobody planned for this – and in your way, we know as soon as you knew the contingency plan was in place for your family and friends. We are grateful for touching our lives, your friendship – Rest In Peace dear friend until we meet again.

    It took no time after meeting Kevin my Freshman year in college to realize that he was special. Kevin literally was that guy that was the best at EVERYTHING he did. If the game was on the line, you were running behind his block no doubt. As I followed Kevin and kept in touch through the years, I saw all the success he had Coaching and what a wonderful family he built with Sherri and none of it surprised me. Kevin was the guy who was the best at everything Husband, Dad, Coach, Teammate, Friend, and you will be greatly missed. RIP my Teammate and Friend.

    I’m Fred’s sister Diane. I am so sorry for hearing about your loss. I was at a few cook outs and spoke with him. He was a very nice person . Fred talked about him all the day and never had a bad thing to say. I pray that God will comfort all of you.

    I just heard about the passing of brother Kevin. My heart is broken. Truly one of the great ones. His parents, wife, children, and friends are so blessed to have had him in their lives. I coached with Kevin at Triton College. What a great example to the players and coaches. Always positive. Always kind. Always a professional. He will be missed but equally loved in heaven by our lord and savior, Jesus Christ. I’ll see you again big fella in the great football stadium in the sky. Ach
