Helen Marie Nugent

Helen Marie (McMahon) Nugent, 89, Native of Chicago and long time resident of Bellwood IL, passed away peacefully surrounded by family. She is survived by the love of her life, her husband of 61 years, Robert. She is also survived by her five children Mary (Patrick) Twigg, Theresa, Kathleen, Anne and Maureen; the second love of her life her grandson Brendan; sister-in-law Kathleen (Nugent) Thompson, brother-in-law Michael Nugent; many nieces, nephews, cousins and their families. She was preceded in death by her brother James McMahon on, sister Kathleen “Kay” Grossman, her parents Thomas McMahon of Drumgaze, County Monaghan, Ireland and Nellie (Griffin) McMahon of Fossa, County Kerry, Ireland, and cherished sisters & brothers-in-laws. Helen graduated from Sienna High School Chicago in 1949 and then attended DePaul University. As a devoted public servant she enjoyed the many years of her career spent as a loyal accountant and office manager at the Village of Bellwood before retiring in 1996. Helen and Bob are former parishioners of St. Simeon and St. John Chrysostom parishes in Bellwood, St. Domitilla in Hillside, and most recently Visitation Parish Catholic Church in Elmhurst. Helen enjoyed celebrating all things Irish and cherished her trips there visiting relatives and exploring the country. She had a dry and witty sense of humor which came in handy raising five opinionated daughters. Nothing made her happier than when one of her kids stopped by or rang her up on a way-too-overdue phone call, or when she got to hang out with her grandson. She lead a selfless and humble life devoted to helping others in ways that many times went unrecognized and sometimes unappreciated, never expecting nor wanting anything in return. She changed each life she touched for the better and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. . Visitation Thursday, 5:00 p.m until 7:00 p.m. and Friday, 8:00 a.m. until time of funeral 9:15 a.m. at Gibbons Funeral Home, 134 South York Road, (½ mile North of Saint Charles Road), Elmhurst. Mass of Christian Burial 10:00 a.m. at Visitation Catholic Church. Interment Queen of Heaven Catholic Cemetery, Hillside. In lieu of COVID-19 guidelines, please note that facility capacity is limited and we request all attendees maintain social distancing and wear a mask. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice. For funeral information please call 630-832-0018 or www.gibbonsfuneralhome.com

What a perfectly eloquent memorial to a wonderful women. Helen was everything that was said and more. Even after a long and well-lived life, we still are not ready to let them go. She will live on in the history of your hearts and in the memories of the many people whose lives she touched.
I will hold your family in prayer

Please accept my sympathies. Losing a parent, especially one who tried to keep the family together, is never easy. She made a giant impact on everyone she met. May her family find peace in knowing she is whole again. Janet Dubsky
